Shem HaMephorash: the 72 sacred letter combinations

An original, non-profit look at one of the oldest traditions in Jewish mysticism — with 72 short reflections written specifically for this project.

Where do these 72 combinations come from?

In the Book of Exodus (14:19-21), the Torah describes the moment the sea parted during the Exodus from Egypt. That passage is made up of three consecutive verses that, in the original Hebrew text, each contain exactly 72 letters.

For centuries, Jewish Kabbalistic tradition has taught a method for reading those three verses together — the first left to right, the second right to left, and the third left to right again — and combining their letters vertically, column by column. The result is 72 combinations of three Hebrew letters. This set is referred to in various sources as the Shem HaMephorash ("the explicit Name" or "the unfolded Name").

This reading method and the 72 combinations that result from it are part of the public domain: they appear in classical Kabbalistic works and in dozens of independent books and websites published over the centuries, by many different authors and publishers, none of whom owns the biblical text or the letter combinations themselves. The only thing that can be copyrighted is the specific wording a given author chooses to explain or meditate on each combination — which is why every title and reflection on this page was written from scratch for Adonai, without copying or translating any existing book.

This project has no affiliation with any specific organization, publisher, school, or center dedicated to this subject.

How to use this page

Each of the 72 combinations includes its traditional transliteration (for example, "Vav Jei Vav"), the corresponding Hebrew letters, and a short, original reflection — a simple thought meant to invite a pause, not a magic formula or a promise of results. Take it as an invitation to stillness, not as an instruction to follow literally.
